Both surfing and yoga require deep concentration and willpower to be successful, as well as foster a certain connection to nature, making them a great combination. By doing both surfing and yoga, you can create a deeper connection with nature and also benefit your mind body, and soul, which is why Aloha Bali Surf offers our surf and yoga retreats in Bali.
If you’re wondering about some of the poses that will help prepare you for a day of surfing, we’ve collected some of them for you here.
Child’s Pose
One of the best poses to start the day with is the balasana, or child’s pose, with your knees spread out wide to each side of your body. You can either rest your arms by your sides or join your palms together over your head.
Downward-Facing Dog
Another common yoga pose used for warmup exercises is the downward-facing dog, which can be done directly after the child’s pose by simply straightening your arms and lifting your knees. Then walk your legs and stretch them out and relax your neck muscles by moving your head slowly from left to right.
Plank Position
This post helps strengthen your core muscles and shoulders and back, which you’ll be using every second you’re out on the waves. To move from downward dog to the plank, also known as the kumbhakasana position, move your shoulders above your wrists and then push your heels back and pull your navel toward your spine.
Upward-Facing Dog
This pose is pretty much exactly the opposite of a downward-facing dog, hence the name. With this pose, you’ll place your palms next to your rib cage, then press the top of your feet down into the ground. Take a deep breath and straighten your arms, lifting your chest into the air and pushing away from the ground with your hands. Then, roll your shoulders back and out to the sides. This pose resembles what one might do when stretching their back and stomach.
